Augmented Reality, a godsend for industry.

AR or Augmented Reality is a technology that has been around for quite a long time, but has only recently really taken off. I followed this somewhat at a distance, assuming that Augmented Reality is more something for the gaming world. Until I attended a mini-symposium by the Eindhoven-based company Isaac in Eindhoven. They were demonstrating Microsoft’s HoloLens. One of the AR glasses currently on the market. Microsoft itself calls it Mixed Reality. See also their blog: Design Revolution
Using the glasses was an enlightening learning moment for me. You see the real environment as it is, while the glasses project a digital 3D image into this environment at a predetermined location. This gives it a holographic effect. Namely, you can see the digital object from all sides, as in real life.
Meanwhile, this technique and variants of it are emerging in the production environment. This video from BMW shows an application of this. One company implementing Augmented Reality in industrial environments is Germany’s Ubimax.
I am convinced that Augmented Reality or Mixed Reality in any form is going to play a major role in further digitizing the paperless desired organization. Linking Augmented Reality to CAD systems and ERP systems provides endless possibilities. Organizational forms and process runs in an industrial company may well look very different. Informing and instructing people takes on a totally different dimension with this technology. In my opinion, this is the solution for a truly lean and efficient industrial organization.
